Do you use or are planning to buy a beer fermenter in which the pressure is higher than 0.5 bar?
Do you use or are planning to buy a pneumatic press?
Then you're dealing with pressure equipment, which is subject to strict legal standards in the EU!
The design, production and use of pressure equipment in the EU is governed by the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). Its purpose is to ensure a high level of safety and prevent potential accidents. Only pressure equipment that meets the requirements of the PED Directive can obtain a PED certificate.
What is PED certification and why is it so important?
"Probably not. You'd be committing an offense. Above all, driving such a car is dangerous and can lead to an accident!"
The same applies to pressure vessels without a PED certificate. They can be used, but that is not in accordance with the law, and the vessel's safety is also questionable. We recommend that you follow the instructions of experts when purchasing pressure equipment.
The PED certificate is an official document, issued by a notified body designated to assess the conformity of pressure equipment. This certificate and the product's technical documentation (design calculations, reports on used materials and production processes, pressure tests etc.) prove that the equipment is safe and that it complies with European standards.
How do you check if a pressure vessel has a PED certificate?
Let's look at an example: Beer fermenter ZMIX 1000L, max. operating pressure 2.5 bar
1. Check the data on the vessel's nameplate. The nameplate must be installed on a visible part. It must contain all required product information, the CE marking, and the standards used.
2. Make sure the identification number of the Notified Body that issued the certificate of conformity is indicated next to the CE marking. If this number is missing, the vessel most likely does NOT meet EU standards.
What are the risks of using non-PED certified vessels?
The sale and use of pressure equipment without a PED certificate is illegal in the EU.
Unsuitable pressure equipment can present a serious safety risk.
